A woman with a sword looks back to her left. Her right hand is hidden by her long sleeve, just above the sword handle. Her blue outer robe is partially removed and reveals a patterned red and blue robe beneath. The bottom of the outer robe has a spray of flowers, and a crest adorns the left sleeve. A lantern lights up the stage behind her.

Three figures, two men and a woman, are seen seated around a round table with a lamp; all are engaged in reading in the pool of light provided by the lamp. The rest of the interior is fairly dark, particularly in the portion of the room behind the lamp. The man at the back of the table is shown roughly face-on; the man to the left is leaning back with his legs stretched out in front of him; the woman is closest to the viewer, shown in profile, holding her book fairly close to her face.

This installation is composed of a group of gelatin silver prints that are hung on the wall with sixty-four light bulbs strung throughout, a web of hanging electric cables connecting them. In the center hang three larger photos of young people's faces. Above each and below the center image are smaller versions of similar portrait photographs. Four of these smaller photos are also arranged in the line of the large photographs, one on each end, and two separating the larger pictures.

20th century
Gift of Dr. James and Vivian Curtis
1997/1.348
This is a tondo painting with a circular frame that is painted in tones of violet. It is a still-life scene that shows a lamp, resting on a table, set against a green wall. On the wall behind the lamp is a painting, but only the lower right-hand corner is visible due to the sharp curve of the circular format of the painting. On the table, beside the lamp, is a piece of paper and an ink well in the shape of a human figure. The base of the lamp has a curvilinear profile and the pleated shade is painted in bright colors of orange, pink, green and yellow. Both the scene and the frame are painted with short, dot-like brushstrokes.

Under the Lamp (Sous la Lampe)
1883 – 1893
Museum purchase made possible by a gift from Helmut Stern
1988/1.140
This painting shows a woman and a boy sitting at a dining table that is set for a meal. The woman, on the right side of the composition, is shown in a profile view and is using a ladle to pour soup into a bowl. The boy, seated in a ladder back chair, is holding a spoon with his hands resting on the table. He is gazing at the soup bowl. Both figures have somber, quiet facial expressions. A table lamp, seen only partially on the far left of the painting, is the single source of light. So, the figures and the table top are brightly lit, but the rest of the setting is very dark. Items on the table such as the plate with melon, the milk bottle, the salt and pepper shakers and the tablecloth, are shown in realistic detail, much like a still- life painting.

The peaked shade has eight panels with overlaid linear copper border decoration above a cove molded lower rim. The lamp retains four original sockets. The upper column consists of an octagonal capped vase-form with a dominant ogee profile over a round medial column which is slightly beveled in form and decorated with spaced, spirally arranged brass rods applied to its surface. The octagonal molded base repeats the ogee profile of the upper vase form.
